It all started last Friday when...
This morning Hunter started crying at 4:45am. We knew all he wanted was to come get in bed with us, so we let him cry (watching him on the monitor). Hunter stopped screaming and said, "Mommy....OUT!" [Then quietly listened to see if we were coming.] Then, "Daddy....OUT!" Then, I said, ummm Clint, I don't see him anymore. No sooner did I get the words out, we hear Hunter crying and he was clearly not in his room. Clint ran out to get him. Hunter took it upon himself to get out since we did not come get him out. UGH!
Then on Saturday....
Hunter scared the living day out of me this morning (2:30am). I guess since he figured out he could crawl out of his crib the night before, he decided to do it in stealth mode today. Ninja style, he crawled out of his crib, walked out of his room, walked into our room over (to my side of the bed of course), grabbed my arm, and said "hi Mommy!" He was just as proud as could be of himself. But since he had not made a single peep, I nearly wet the bed when he grabbed my arm!!!
That lead us to the decision to put him in his big boy bed. Clint converted his crib to a toddler bed. Hunter LOVED it (before it was bedtime). The first night in his bed went a little something like this...
Clint put Hunter in bed. "Hunter, it is time to lay in bed, relax, and close your eyes."
~ I am closing my eyes Daddy...haha ~
Then I read Hunter two books and tried to get him to relax in his bed (uh, yeah, that didn't last long)...
Then, Clint stayed in his room with him trying to get him to fall asleep in bed. I looked at the monitor at one point and Clint's upper half of his body was attempting to lay in bed with Hunter...haha
I went and took a shower and came back to this....
Guess Hunter won the battle. Clint put Hunter in his bed, and then about 1am, Hunter woke up again. We played this game over and over and over, until Mommy and Daddy were tired, and Hunter won...again! We finished the morning with a slumber party in our bed.
On Sunday....
Clint and I decided that something had to change. So we put a lock on the outside of Hunter's door. It was the HARDEST thing to do as a Mommy!! Hunter woke up at about 2:30am and started crying. When he was in his crib, we would let him cry for a little while before getting him. Typically with him, if he sees us it is game over and he will fight to get what he wants. BUT if he doesn't see us, he will calm down and go back to sleep. So we tried the same strategy with the locked door. Hunter cried from somewhere between 2-3 minutes. The ENTIRE time (which seemed like forever) I was praying to God for him to make sure Hunter knew how much I loved him! Very hard thing to do as a Mommy. But fortunately, Hunter crawled back in bed and went back to sleep. I told Clint, "it can't be that easy!"
Since then, we have locked the door at night but we have not heard a single peep from him. In fact the past two mornings we had to wake him up. I hope he will get used to not getting up, so we can go back to letting him sleep with his door cracked open.
Even though it was sooner than expected, and has been slightly hard on my heart, he has done WONDERFUL!! I am so proud of my baby boy! Hard to believe that in a short 5 months that my baby will be the big brother!
